Compassionate Care and the Language We Use Hosted by the Compassionate Care in ABA SIG
1 CEUs will be available for attendance
Location: Zoom (Login will be emailed prior to the presentation)
Presenters: Dr. Amy Kenzer
Summary:
This presentation will examine how the language we use within the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) influences the way we provide care, interact with clients, and collaborate with caregivers and other professionals. We will explore how specific terminology—such as "client" vs. "learner" or "treatment plan" vs. "learning plan"—can shape our focus on deficits versus strengths, ultimately affecting the meaningfulness and compassion of our services. Additionally, we will discuss the impact of ABA-specific language, such as the use of "tacting" vs. "naming" or "manding" vs. "requesting," and how it may create unnecessary separation between practitioners and families. The session will also address challenges related to required terminology for funders while emphasizing ways to integrate more person-centered, accessible language without compromising clinical integrity.
