Feeding SIG The Importance of Interprofessional Collaboration When Providing Behavioral Feeding Interventions

Summary: Pediatric feeding disorders are complex and can stem from a variety of factors including medical, behavioral, feeding-skill, and nutritional complications (Goday et al., 2017).In this presentation, Dr. Seiverling will describe the roles of common disciplines (medical provider, dietitian, speech and/or occupational therapist, and psychologist or behavior analyst) involved when using an interdisciplinary approach to assess and treat pediatric feeding disorders. She will emphasize how the behavior analyst’s unique skill set in the areas of behavioral assessment, data collection, preference assessments, caregiver training, and antecedent- and consequence-based interventions can be integrated into interdisciplinary feeding interventions to improve acceptance of target foods and decrease problem behavior. A case study will be used to illustrate how interdisciplinary collaboration may look depending on a patient profile.
